Motivation on Motivation

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

As students on the Motivation High School design team discussed their project research plan, the conversation touched upon the challenging topic of how to encourage and sustain behavior change as well as the effects of negative consequences and positive incentives.   "The problem is you try to run up the whole staircase at once and you end up dropping it," said one student, explaining why so many of us fall short of goals we set for ourselves.  "If you just go step by step, you'll get there eventually."  The team noted that schools too often seem to rely on negative consequences to motivate students, and started to consider how they might explore the effectiveness of positive incentives.
